View Clearing in North Georgia
View clearing is selective removal of brush, saplings and chosen trees to open a mountain, valley or lake view from your home, deck or homesite. It is for North Georgia homeowners and landowners who want the view without stripping the hillside or losing the trees that make the property feel private.
View Clearing, the Northline way
A good view is often the reason someone buys a North Georgia mountain lot or a home near the lake. Then the woods grow in. Saplings become trees, brush fills in the slope, and the view that sold the place shrinks a little every year. View clearing brings it back by removing the right material, not all of it.
We start from the spot where you will enjoy the view, usually the deck, the main windows or the planned house site, and work out what is blocking it. Often it is a band of brush and small trees on the slope below, which a tracked forestry mulcher can grind in place. We keep larger trees that frame the view, give shade or hold the slope, and leave mulch on the ground to protect the soil.
With more than 30 years in sitework, including the last 7 in turnkey civil site development, we approach a view job as a slope job. We look at how water runs off the hillside, how steep it is and what is holding the soil before we cut anything. A view that costs you a washed-out hillside is not a good trade, and we will tell you if a section should be left alone.

What we cover
View corridor planning
We stand where you will look out and work with you to decide what to open, what to frame and what to keep.
Brush and sapling removal
We mulch the brush and young trees on the slope that are usually the main thing blocking the view.
Selective thinning
We thin chosen trees to open windows in the canopy while keeping the property shaded and private.
Keep the frame trees
We save the larger trees that frame the view, screen neighbors or anchor the slope.
Slope protection
Mulch stays on the ground and we avoid bare runs, so the hillside keeps its cover after the view is open.
Homesite view planning
On a lot before construction, we clear to open the view from the planned house site and coordinate with your builder.
Opening views on steep North Georgia slopes
Most view lots in North Georgia sit on slopes, and slopes are where clearing mistakes cost the most. The mountain counties have steep ground, rock and thin soils. The trees and brush on a hillside slow rainfall and hold soil with their roots. Selective thinning keeps much of that root system in place while opening sight lines, and mulching leaves the ground covered instead of bare.
On steep sections, we may leave stumps and some low growth in place on purpose to anchor the soil, and focus on removing what is tall enough to block the view. A tracked machine helps on this ground, but some slopes are too steep or rocky for safe machine work. We will tell you honestly where that line is on your property.
Lake views come with their own rules. Shorelines on Lake Lanier and Lake Hartwell are managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and clearing on Corps property requires Corps permission. We work on private property only. Georgia also requires a 25-foot buffer along state waters for land-disturbing activity, 50 feet on trout streams. If you are unsure where your line is or what applies, check with your county and the Corps first.

Our process
Send view photos
Send photos from your deck or homesite looking toward the view, and tell us what you want to see.
Plan from the deck
We stand where you will look out, study the slope and the trees, and give you a free quote with the plan.
Flag keepers and limits
We flag the trees to keep, mark your property line and any buffers, and confirm the clearing limits with you.
Thin and mulch
We remove brush, saplings and chosen trees, checking the view from your spot as we go and leaving mulch on the slope.
Final look
We stand with you at the view, open any last windows you want, and talk about keeping it clear.
View Clearing FAQ
What is view clearing?
View clearing is selective removal of brush, saplings and chosen trees to open a view from a home, deck or homesite. Instead of clearing everything, it targets what blocks the sight line and keeps the trees that frame the view and hold the slope. We use a forestry mulcher and leave mulch on the ground.
How much does view clearing cost?
We give a free quote after seeing the property and the view you want. Cost depends on the size of the area, how dense the growth is, tree size, how steep and rocky the slope is, access for the machine, how selective the work is, and distance from Commerce. Steep, careful thinning takes more time than open brush.
How long does view clearing take?
Many view jobs take a day or two, though larger or steeper areas take longer. Production depends on density, tree size and species, terrain and access, and on how selective the work is. We check the view from your spot as we go, which is worth the time. We give a realistic timeline with your quote.
What is left on the slope after view clearing?
Your keeper trees stand over a slope covered in wood mulch, with stumps cut to about ground level. We do not do below-grade stump grinding, and on steep ground leaving stumps helps hold soil. The mulch protects the hillside from erosion and breaks down over time.
Can you clear my lake view on Lake Lanier or Lake Hartwell?
We can clear on your private property, but not on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers land. Lake Lanier and Lake Hartwell shorelines are managed by the Corps, and clearing on Corps property requires Corps permission. Before we start, we confirm where your property line is. If you are unsure, check with the Corps and your county first.
Will view clearing cause erosion on my hillside?
Done carefully, it should not. We thin selectively, keep larger trees and their roots, leave stumps in place on steep ground, and cover the slope with mulch. We avoid bare runs that funnel water. If part of the slope is too steep or unstable to clear safely, we will tell you and leave it alone.
